A traditional classroom at 36 feet needs a 72" diagonal image for all to
see.

We have mounted projectors in all our classrooms district wide except for
our alternative education room for high school students. We mounted a 42"
LCD t.v. in there this summer. We put it in there because it's a smaller,
more personal environment. Personally, I don't think 42" or so LCD tv's
work very well in most classrooms because they are not large enough.
Additionally, if teachers are using document cameras (which all of our
grades K-6 are), the image becomes even smaller because of the format of the
doc. cam.
When we install projectors we try to give our teachers a 100" diagonal
image, with a few exceptios.
Costwise, we can install a projector for less. Our cost, (including a
projector, mount, installation and electrical (done by contractors) is about
$2,000 per room. The t.v. was about $2500.
That said, the t.v image is spectacular! Also, I've been told that it will
have a lower long-term life (because projectors bulbs have to be replaced).
Eagle County School District in Colorado has put in a bunchof LCD tv's. You
can contact John Kuglin at john at kuglin.com for details.

Hello All
How many of you are now using large, flat screen monitor/tvs instead of
projectors for computers in the classroom? What is the difference in cost?
What are the "upsides" or "downsides" to getting away from computer
projectors?
Thanks for any insight.
Jan
