[MACEP] Best Kid Software

There are also open source programs for kids in addition to the great websites. Tux Paint is my favorite.

They are making great, compact digital video cameras now that are the price that you're considering for software. Our neighborhood kids would haul out the old dress up box and create "news casts", commercials included where the same three or four kids wore different outfits to do the segments. It was hilarious and a fabulous use of their time.

Tricia's on to something -- there are so many amazing sites out there, one hardly needs to purchase software. The North Clackamas site had a great selection. My favorite sites for primary kids: Starfall, PBS Kids, Highlights for Kids, and National Library of Virtual Manipulatives.

My own children love to use our old digital camera, take their own pictures and use comic life to add captions and titles to create a story. My son, a third grader, has created several podcasts using garageband, with very little instruction from me. He has also started his own multiplication imovie.

If I were going to purchase anything, it would be Kidspiration. But check with your school to see if they already have a licensed copy. With the school to home agreement from Inspiration software, teachers can install licensed software on a home computer. I use Kidpiration with my own kids at home for the writing process, categorizing, spelling practice and more.

Most public libraries have a plethora of computer games to check out - like Reader Rabbit and Freddy the Fish. I think this is a better route for these types of programs.

	Hi Everyone,

I'm tutoring a 3rd grader who, due to health concerns, can't be in the classroom until next fall. I'd like to be able to recommend some software (math, specifically, but I'm open to anybody's "this program would be dynamite for a learn-at-home student!") to the family.

The other motive I have for asking is that my own daughter is finishing 1st grade and I'd like to lay out some money ($90?) buying good software pieces for her. Two boys are in pre-school and will follow in their sister's footsteps, so I'm happy to lay down money for good software.

I'm more interested in new software than old, but some oldy-but-goody recommendations wouldn't be terrible, either. Are new versions of Reader Rabbit or Carmen Sandiego better than the old ones? Anybody have ideas of software for me? Can you pass my email along to someone who knows kid software?
	~Tim

		Tim,

You might check out the Student Learning Center created by the Tech TOSAs at the North Clackamas School District. It has some incredible resources for kids, organized by grade level, then by aligned with state content standards. There are also dozens of reference sites, Internet Safety Resources, etc. etc.
