Hello,

My name is Jackie Templeman. I am the Apple Authorized Training Center
Co-Coordinator at Portland Community College, Cascade campus in
Portland, OR. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and our
Apple Authorized Training Center to you all.

PCC's AATC is one of only two Apple Authorized training centers in
Portland. We offer Apple technical courses for all levels of IT
professionals, including courses on how to plan, support, and integrate
Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, and other technologies such as Xsan. Our
in-depth Apple IT certification programs are designed to verify
expertise and create a high level of competency among help desk
personnel, technical coordinators, and system administrators.

Our Apple Pro Training courses will help those who teach digital
production expand their knowledge and skills, such as editing,
composing, special effects, sound designing, web development, or
photography. Upon completion of the course material, a student can
become an Apple Certified Pro by taking the certification exam offered
by our Apple Authorized Training Center. Certification as an Apple
Certified Pro gives you official recognition of your knowledge of
Apple’s professional applications.

Does your department staff need specialized Apple Training? We can
provide it by customizing courses to meet your training needs. Need
training at your location? We can do that too, though some restrictions
do apply. Contact us for more information on these custom services at
503-978-5672.

We're currently conducting registration for summer/fall courses. Here
is a sampling of those courses:

Mac OSX 340: Security Best Practices for Mac OS X v10.4
August 15-17, 2007
The three-day Security Best Practices course provides system and
security administrators with the knowledge
and tools necessary to secure Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server against
local and network attacks. Solutions covered
in the class include Mac OS X specific features as well as third party
tools for monitoring and analysis. Students
will design a security policy template in class to be used as a
starting point for their IT security decisions.
This course is a combination of lecture and hands-on case study
exercises that provide practical real-world
experience.

CLI 101: Introduction to the Unix Command-Line Mindset on OS X
August 13-14, 2007
Do you wish to wield the power of the Unix command line, but are
intimidated by the cryptic syntax and
seemingly never-ending list of commands? This two-day course is
designed specifically to introduce you to The
Command-Line Mindset, where you will learn to wield the power that is
available only through the commandline.
After establishing a solid foundation, we'll explore command line tools
to help with administration and
management of your Mac.

Auto 101: Introduction to Workflow Automation and Scripting on OS X
August 27-29, 2007
In this 3-day course, you will develop a love for developer tools,
using them to automate your workflow,
WITHOUT becoming a full-blown programmer or scripter (who has the
time?). This course empowers you to use
Apple Developer Tools to solve your problems, whether you are a media
developer, or a system administrator,
or pretty much anything else you want OS X to do. You will learn basic,
but powerful automation and scripting
techniques that will launch you into the wonderful world of automation,
allowing you to spend more time doing
more important things in life. We will focus on modifying and creating
custom automations with Automator and
AppleScript. We will then focus on Property Lists, the Defaults
Preferences system, and launchd, underpinnings
to automation. On day 3 we will focus on AppleScript Studio and Perl.
At the beginning of day 1, each attendee
will select some important real-world workflow problems, and then focus
throughout the rest of the course on
solving those specific problems with automation. You WILL be able to
leave this session with the techniques you
need to get started automating (and quite possibly with a working
automation you developed in-class to solve
one of your problems).

Auto 201: Intermediate Workflow Automation and Scripting on OS X
August 30-31, 2007
This two-day session extends your knowledge of automation, focusing on
more advanced scripting and Xcode
techniques such as intermediate Perl and AppleScript Studio. We will
also get an introduction to Javascript,
which is used not only for Web page automation, but for Adobe CS
automation too as its primary scripting
language. You will also learn how to create your own Automator actions
(using AppleScript) to improve your
Automator workflows, and create your own OS X Desktop Widgets (using
JavaScript). As with Auto 101, the
emphasis is on solving your own automation problems, so bring a list of
problems you want to solve!

FCP 101: An Introduction to Final Cut Studio
August 28-30, 2007
This three-day hands-on course introduces students to the primary
feature set and basic interface of Final Cut
Pro. In this course, you learn to perform basic editing functions while
familiarizing yourself with the user
interface. Topics include basic setup, adjusting and customizing
preferences and settings, capturing video and
audio, various editing and trimming techniques, ripple, roll, slip and
slide tools, audio editing and audio
creation, finishing and final output.

Motion 101: An Introduction to Motion 3
October, 2007 (TBA)
Motion is the perfect application for editors looking to create
compelling graphic content without having to farm
the work out to a graphics lab. This two-day course provides a
comprehensive overview of Motion, Apple’s realtime
design motion graphics application. The course covers interface
fundamentals, particles, blend modes,
layer organization, fundamental multi-layer editing techniques and
advanced text effects.

Color 101: An Introduction to Color
December, 2007 (TBA)
This three-day, hands-on course will familiarize students with Apple's
masterful new color grading and
finishing software. Start with the basics of color balancing and
correction, and move on to the fine points
of secondary grading, including scene matching, using vignettes to
isolate and track regions, creating
advanced color effects and looks, skin tone adjustments, adjusting the
composition and framing of a shot,
and much more.

DVDSP 101: An Introduction to DVD Studio Pro 4
December, 2007 (TBA)
This three-day hands-on course delves into the world of DVD authoring
using DVD Studio Pro. In this
comprehensive course, students will learn everything they need to
create a professional DVD title. This course
guides students through every aspect of DVD authoring, from initial
storyboarding to burning and replication.
Using compelling media and a real-world production workflow, students
will learn how to create amazing MPEG
2 video with Compressor as well as how create eye-popping motion menus
directly in DVD Studio Pro. Students
will also “author” a DVD by creating buttons, interactive links,
slideshows, playlists and even adding alternate
audio stream and camera angles.
