Drupal does all kinds of things and is easy to use and configure.

Some examples:

http://edtech.nwresd.org

You can configure roles with different levels of access and there are
several different ways to authenticate users. Drupal is also RSS friendly
which makes it easy to push/pull content from other parts of your web and
from other information sources.

Drupal has a well-supported and active devoplent community and is educator
friendly. You can run it on any OS.
