I have always wanted to do this but then podcasting came along. I
think podcasting makes it easier for both content publishers and
consumers because you can setup a simple web interface for the content
and use services like itunes for subscriptions.
I'm showing off Drupal [http://drupal.org] as a good way to help
schools put student newspapers online. Drupal has a very easy to use
audio module. All you have to do is upload the mp3 file and you're
online with a nice little streaming flash player. If you head for
http://k12os.org and scroll down a few articles you'll see several
podcasts from NECC. K12os.org is running on Drupal.
With services like youtube.com becoming so popular, I wonder if audio
streaming is about to become "so yesterday." I don't think so.
Creating an audio broadcast, even if it's just one voice recorded on a
$50 iRiver mp3 player/recorder is still fun and engaging for students.
I think audio broadcasting is something we can put to good use in
schools regardless of how it's done.
