StuffIt 10.0.2 Read Me
Welcome to StuffIt 10.0.2 for Macintosh
All of us at Allume Systems would like to thank you for using our
products. This document contains information about installing the
10.0.2 versions of StuffIt Expander (Stand-Alone version), StuffIt
Standard, and StuffIt Deluxe. It also includes any last minute
information that did not make it into the Electronic Help files.
System Requirements
StuffIt Expander (Stand-Alone version): At least 20 MB of available
disk space.
StuffIt Standard: At least 25 MB of available disk space.
StuffIt Deluxe: At least 50 MB of available disk space.
StuffIt Deluxe and Standard: CD/DVD burning requires an Apple iLife-
compatible CD/DVD burner. .Mac uploading requires a .Mac account
(visit http://www.mac.com for information about obtaining a .Mac
subscription).
All versions of StuffIt 10.x require Mac OS X 10.3 or later. Certain
features of StuffIt Deluxe (Spotlight and Automator plugins) are Mac
OS X 10.4 specific, and therefore require Mac OS X 10.4. It is highly
recommended that you stay current with Apple's free OS updates. You
can do so by going to System Preferences and running "Software
Update". As of this writing the latest free update for OS 10.3 is
10.3.9. The latest free update for OS 10.4 is 10.4.4.
Older versions of StuffIt Deluxe, StuffIt Standard, and StuffIt
Expander are available for those not yet running Mac OS X 10.3 or later:
Version 8.0.2 of StuffIt is the recommended version for those using
Mac OS 10.1.5 through 10.2.8.
Version 7.0.3 of StuffIt is the recommended version for those using
Mac OS 8.6 through 9.2.2.
You can purchase these older versions of StuffIt Deluxe or download
these older versions of StuffIt Standard from the Allume online store
at: http://www.allume.com/store
StuffIt Expander is Free!
If you are exchanging StuffIt archives with other users (see
“Backwards Compatibility” below), they can download StuffIt Expander
for free at:
http://www.stuffit.com/expander
StuffIt Expander is available as a stand-alone installer for Mac OS
10.4. For earlier versions of Mac OS and for Windows users, it is
included in the trialware StuffIt Standard.
Installing StuffIt 10.0.2
If you purchased or downloaded an electronic copy of this software,
please make a backup copy of the file you downloaded (the installer
or disk image) on a CD or a disk other than your main Hard Disk. You
will need it in case you ever have to reinstall this copy of StuffIt.
Locate and double-click the file called, “StuffIt (Expander,
Standard, or DLX) Installer” to start the installation. If you
downloaded a disk image ( a .DMG file), you will need to double-click
on this first to mount it, then find and launch the installer
application.
You will be prompted for the System Administrator’s password.
Typically, this is the password you use to log onto your computer. If
your computer automatically logs you on, this is the password you
chose when you first installed and configured OS X.
StuffIt Deluxe users: Click “Continue” at the opening splash screen.
At the StuffIt Read Me screen, click "Continue" again.
At the next screen, read the “Software License Agreement” (SLA), and
click the “Agree” button if you accept its terms. You must agree to
the Software License Agreement before installing the software. If you
do not agree to the terms of the SLA you must quit the installation.
StuffIt Deluxe users only: Enter your Name, Company, and
Registration Number (see “ Finding Your Registration Number “ below)
when prompted to do so and then click "Register". If you are
upgrading an existing registered copy of StuffIt Deluxe 10, you will
not be prompted to enter a registration number.
At the next screen, click “Install” to install this StuffIt product.
StuffIt Deluxe users only: If you wish to install only part of the
StuffIt Deluxe package, click the “Easy Install” pop-up menu and
choose “Custom Install”, then select the package(s) you want to install.
At the next screen, click the "Choose" button to install this StuffIt
product into the OS X Applications folder (this is the default and
recommended location).
When prompted, you can optionally choose to add icons for StuffIt
Expander and DropStuff to your dock.
When the installation has finished, Log Out and then Log In again to
ensure that all components that use the StuffIt Frameworks are
updated with the new version. If you are upgrading from an older
version, the installer will automatically remove old versions of
System components and replace them with newer versions. The installer
WILL NOT delete the old StuffIt application folder. When the
installation is complete you can manually remove your old StuffIt
application folder by dragging it to the trash.
Finding Your Registration Number
You can find your registration number on the paper insert inside the
sleeve that contains your CD, or in the confirmation E-mail you
received after purchasing the product online. StuffIt Deluxe
registration numbers have a prefix beginning with DLX, StuffIt
Standard registration numbers have a prefix beginning with DRP.
Be sure to keep a copy of your registration number in a safe place.
You will need it if you request technical support or if you need to
reinstall your software.
Register your purchase with us!
Registration enables us to notify you when updates to your software
become available. Please take the time to register your product at
the Allume web site here:

Change Notes for StuffIt 10.0.2
Fixed an issue with the StuffItEngineShell.cfm for StuffIt SDK client
applications - a SIOUX error was generated when the StuffIt
Frameworks were not present.
Fixed an issue for StuffIt SDK client applications that rely on the
SDK to provide a passphrase prompt - an error was generated. Prompt
is now displayed correctly.
Fixed a StuffIt Expander issue - crash on Expand when destination is
set to Merge into location specified by archive and archive is
encrypted with a password.
Fixed a StuffIt Engine issue - a particular minor Base64/MIME file
wouldn't decode.
Fixed a StuffIt Engine issue - a particular gzip file wouldn't decode.
Fixed a StuffIt Engine issue that affected StuffIt X archives when
archive was compacted after modification.
Fixed an SEA Maker issue with double-byte file names.
Fixed issue with browsing a StuffIt X archive after extracting files
and closing the archive.
Change Notes for StuffIt 10.0.1
Fixed a crash that occurred at startup when StuffIt's version
checking code attempted to find an active network connection. This
crash only occurred if no IPv6 address was available.
Fixed a problem with StuffIt Expander whereby an erroneous error
message was being displayed after Expander had finished expanding an
archive. This problem was being caused in a situation where the
archive contained a single item and the "Continue to Expand..."
preference was set.
Fixed a problem that some users encountered when, on expansion,
StuffIt Expander attempted to create a surrounding folder that used a
name longer that 31 characters.
StuffIt Expander and Dropstuff have been updated so that the prompt
to enter a password, when either creating or expanding an encrypted
archive, are now displayed as part of a drop down sheet on the
progress window.
What's New in StuffIt 10
For those upgrading from older versions of StuffIt, version 10
introduces a number of new and improved features. The highlights
include:
All StuffIt products: Improvements to the StuffIt X Format
JPEG Compression: The StuffIt X format now allows you to compress
your JPEG images up to 30% without any loss of image quality.
Improved compression speed: A number of changes have been made to the
StuffIt X archive format that should significantly improve
compression speed when you are using the "Better" compression level.
StuffIt Deluxe suite:
View Thumbnails in an archive: The StuffIt Deluxe application now
allows you to view thumbnails of StuffIt X archived JPEG images
directly from within the StuffIt Deluxe browser.
Spotlight Support (Mac OS 10.4 only): The StuffIt Deluxe suite now
includes a Spotlight importer that allows Spotlight to view file
names for items stored within StuffIt, Zip, and Tar archives.
Automator Support (Mac OS 10.4 only): The StuffIt Deluxe suite now
includes support for Apple’s new Automator automation tool. You can
now include steps that create and expand StuffIt, Zip, and Tar
archives in your Automator work flows.
Improved .Mac support: StuffIt Express PE (included in the the
StuffIt Deluxe suite) can now create drop box applications that send
and retrieve files from an iDisk.
Create Self-Extracting Archives for Mac OS X: The StuffIt Deluxe
suite now includes SEA Maker which allows you to create self-
extracting archives for Mac OS X. These archives allow you to install
files to any location on the hard drive that you choose, and also
allow you to display a splash screen and read me file as items are
being expanded.
Improved MultiProcessor Support: Support for multi-threaded operation
has been extended to include compression actions preformed via the
Magic Menu and StuffIt contextual menu.
Backwards Compatibility
Some of the new features in StuffIt Deluxe 10.x will cause the
StuffIt X archives you create to require at least StuffIt Expander
9.0.2 for Mac or StuffIt 9.0.x for Windows to open. To create StuffIt
X archives that are compatible all the way back to StuffIt Expander
7.0.3 for Macintosh and StuffIt 8.0 on Windows use these steps:
Turn off JPEG compression. You can find this option on the “StuffIt”
page of the “Preferences” dialog in the DropStuff application.
Set the StuffIt X compression method to Faster. Again, you can find
this option on the “StuffIt” page of the “Preferences” dialog in the
DropStuff application.
Changing these settings in the DropStuff application will only effect
archives created by DropStuff. For information on creating compatible
archives with StuffIt Deluxe and MagicMenu/StuffIt CM please check
the documentation included with those applications.
Changes to Zip Compression: The Zip format in StuffIt 10 now uses
Apple's AppleSingle encoding method for preserving resource forks on
older Mac files rather than our tried-and-true MacBinary encoding
method. This means that if you enable "Preserve Mac Content" when you
make Zip archives, they will now be compatible with Panther and
Tiger's built-in unzipping tool, but it also means that they are NOT
compatible with older versions of StuffIt Expander (Note: StuffIt
Expander 10 can expand either style). People using Panther or later
can update to the StuffIt Expander 10. People using older versions of
the Mac OS will not be able to expand the resource forks of these
files properly.
Basically, if you’re sending files to another Mac user, don’t use
Zip. Really, trust us on this.
Encrypted Zips and Zips created using the Deflate64 option are not
supported by Apple's built-in unzipping tool.
Known Issues
Issue: Expanded .sit archives appear empty on Mac OS 10.4 (aka Tiger)
An issue exists, when expanding StuffIt 5 (.sit) archives on Mac OS X
10.4, whereby the expansion process appears to result in incomplete
expansion. Expanded folders are either empty, or have fewer items
than expected. This issue only occurs when you have turned on the
"Show Item Info" option in the Finder's "Show View Options" dialog.
In reality, all the items have been expanded, they are just not being
shown in the Finder. You can verify this by using the Terminal.app
and looking in the "empty" folder.
This is a Mac OS 10.4 Finder update issue.
Workaround: You can easily force the Finder to update the empty
folder at any time by dragging a new item into the folder after
expansion completes.
You can also avoid this issue by turning off the “Show Item Info”
option in the Finder.
To disable the "Show Item Info" option:
Open a new Finder window.
Set it to "Icon" view.
Select "Show View Options" from the Finder's "View" menu (cmd + J).
Uncheck the "Show Item Info" checkbox.
Issue: Erroneous error when expanding compressed or encoded Disk
Images with Continue to Expand enabled and Mount Disk Images disabled.
Expanding a compressed or encoded disk image (.dmg) file when the DMG
is the only item in the archive and with “Continue to Expand” enabled
and “Mount Disk Images” disabled will generate an erroneous
unrecognized file error.
Workaround: enabling “Mount Disk Images” or disabling “Continue to
Expand” will eliminate this error.
An Important Note about Archive Sizes
We always recommend using StuffIt X (.sitx) compression due to its
superiority to other formats. It offers better compression, better
protection, and the capacity for very large archive sizes into the
terabyte range. If you are creating archives in Zip (.zip) or the
previous StuffIt format (.sit) please be aware that if the total size
of the files you want to compress is at or near 2 GB, the resulting
archive may not be usable and the data inside may be unrecoverable.
You may attempt making larger archives in these older formats, but
always test them to make sure they expand correctly and that all the
files are usable. As always, it is important to keep a backup copy of
your files.
Getting Technical Support
If you're having a technical problem with StuffIt and you can’t find
the answer in our Users Guide or Electronic Help, please go to:
http://support.allume.com/techsupport/
Once there, be sure to check our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
and Forum posts. If you don't see your question in the "Most Common
Questions" section, our Support site offers an easy three-step
process for finding all the FAQ's and Forum posts related to your
particular version of the product. Just click the link for "Product
Knowledge Base" and follow the three easy steps. The chances are that
someone else has already reported the same problem, and we've posted
information about it.
There is also an intuitive search engine which allows you to search
the FAQ's and Forum posts for keywords and then search within your
results. In the unusual event that you look for an answer but do not
find it, you will then be given the opportunity to submit your
question on our Support Forum where it will be addressed online by
the Forum's resident experts and/or Allume Support Specialists.
In order to reply to your question, we need you to include as much of
the following information as possible:
- The exact version of the product you are using:
This can be found in the product "About box" (available in the
product menu just to the right of the Apple menu when your StuffIt
product is in the foreground of your screen).
- The exact version of the Mac OS you are using:
This can be found by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple menu
in the Finder on Mac OS X.
- A step by step description of how to reproduce the issue you are
reporting.
- The exact text of any error messages.
