[MACEP] Mac help

Howdy, I am working on a donated PPC9600/350 macintosh. We are trying to troubleshoot. When we try to boot from an OS X.1 disk we get a broken folder icon. I know about the sad face, but not the broken folder. WE also with OS ( we get a can not install on this computer. go to update installer...
Any ideas??
