[MACEP] Open Office comments

I'm assuming most of the schools in the Portland area get software from
OETC? (maybe yes - maybe no) OETC has initiated an program for parents
and teachers to acquire MS Office Pro for $74.00. Not free but not
expensive either then you don't have to concern yourself with
translation. The likelihood of parents having Open Office are slim. Many
will have MS Works. I'm not thumping a drum for either or...my concern
is what's best for the students and parents over a long period of time.
My experience has taught me to try many things but I end up back using
the standard and what's most commonly available for most people. Free is
never always free. Free sometimes costs time which translates into
money.

I use it exclusively at home because it is free, cross platform, and
has
a built in PDF writer.

Hello All,

I'm playing with OpenOffice.org and considering beginning to migrate
student machines to this FREE alternative to MS Office. I would be
interested to hear from any of you who have used it. So far, I haven't
found anything that I don't like about it, but am just a few days in.
It
also seems to be pretty easy to translate files between the two
applications, but then I'm used to working cross-platform, so don't
have
any problems with file transfer.

Also interested in what kinds of responses you got from staff and
parents
when you started the transition. I like the prospect of being able to
offer
the software to parents to use at home, and thus giving the kids
consistency on both ends for their files.

Any comments would be appreciated.
