I haven't used it, but I noticed this article that came out in the TechTails
newsletter from Small Dog Computers (below). GIMP is a UNIX method and this
week's Download Dispatch has "The GIMP" which is one of many free graphics
programs using the GIMP interface.

Printer Support in OS X
by Troy at smalldog.com

Several customers have upgraded to OS X 10.4 in the past couple of
weeks only to discover that their printers are no longer supported.
One gentleman had a Canon i70. It worked great in OS 10.2.8 but when
he bought a new computer he could not get his printer to work. He
went to Canon to look for a driver but there was none listed for the
Mac. I suggested that he take a look at the Apple site to see what
printers were supported and he did. He found this page, which
answered some of his questions:

http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/printing/

When he checked out the following article, which was supposed to have
links for the manufacturers' websites for printer support, it was a
little sparse. =)

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1118.html

In the end he was going to try to get it working by either calling
Apple and seeing what they had to say by or trying Gimp-Print.

The Gimp-Print driver is a print driver (or printer software)
provided in Mac OS X to support older printers. You should choose the
Gimp-Print driver only if there is no driver available for the
printer you're using.

We were able to find the Drivers page for OS X which has recently
been revamped (the entire OS X Download section has been updated and
is easier to use). Canon drivers is one of the top 10 downloads from
this page.
