I upgraded to InDesign (Mac OSX) when PageMaker was no longer supported
on the Mac platform. Many of the keyboard commands from PageMaker were
ported over, which made it easy. The ability to edit on-the-fly (as
opposed to PageMaker's Edit layer) is a plus.
I dislike is the way it handles text wrapping. Once the graphic or text
frame has been selected for wrapping, it's difficult to resize the
object in conventional (shift-click and drag on a corner handle)
fashion. One solution has been to resize graphics in photo manipulation
software before importing; another is the resize by percentage feature.
I feel this is a downgrade from the "wrapping" capabilities available
in PageMaker.
While I don't have personal experience with InDesign's ability to
generate an index with page references, Ricky Korach (Lake Oswego HS
yearbook) raved about this feature.
