The older method still works, I believe.

hold down these FOUR keys:  <command><delete><option><shift> after hearing the
chime and keep holding it down until you see a smiling Mac (OS pre-X) or the
gray apple (X).  This works on computers back through System 7.

The way I remember that combination is "CD-OS"
