Yeesh, I'm afraid these are the answers. The OS 9 printer drivers are 
not installed on the computers.

Thank you, Darrin and Richard! Between your answers, I found the 
solution AND a better understanding of the problem.

One last question. Now that AppleTalk is off and there is no OS 9 
driver installed, does that mean that they have never printed from an 
OS 9 program?

If so, I'm NOT going to install one now.  Instead, I'll just add the 
solution to my troubleshooting file.

Having jumped from OS 7 to OS X (via Windows), sometimes things are 
very confusing.
