We've used Norton Utilities more than once to snag impotent files off goner HDs. Maybe you've already tried that.

Not my box. belongs to a teacher and her kids college apps are on it,
otherwise I would not mess with it. Do not want to pull the drive, but
may have too.
tried alt OS, but HD will either not mount or it asks to format it.

Oh, wait there is another possibility. Boot from an OS 9 cd (hold down
the C
key at startup) this will give you networking capabilities. Once booted
see
if you can get into the HD and copy off the files you need.
Unfortunately I
believe you only get AppleTalk networking, but that will be better than
not
getting the files.
